Almost every homeowner in Nashville has been told to open the crawl space vents in summer and close them in winter. The winter half is reasonable. The summer half is based on a model of how ventilation works that does not hold in a humid climate, and it is why so many crawl spaces here are wet in August.
What summer air does under a Nashville house
Crawl space soil and the masonry around it stay cool through the summer, well below the outdoor air temperature. Warm outdoor air holds a great deal of moisture. When that air comes through a vent and meets cool surfaces, it drops below its dew point and the moisture condenses out.
That is why a crawl space can be dripping in July with no leak anywhere. The water is coming from the air you invited in. Opening the vents on a humid August day is not drying the crawl space, it is supplying it, and the wetter the outdoor air the more it supplies.
Why the vents were there in the first place
Building codes required crawl space ventilation for decades on the theory that moving air removes moisture, which is true in a dry climate and in a crawl space with a bare earth floor evaporating groundwater upward. In that situation venting is genuinely better than nothing.
Modern codes recognise the alternative. A crawl space with a sealed vapour barrier over the ground, sealed vents, insulated walls and either a small amount of conditioned air or a dehumidifier is permitted, and in the humid south it consistently outperforms the vented approach.
The practical middle ground
If the crawl space is staying dry with a good ground vapour barrier and no standing water, the least-harm approach is to close vents during the humid months and during freezing weather, and open them during the mild dry stretches in spring and autumn when outdoor air is genuinely drier than the crawl.
That requires attention nobody reliably gives it. A hygrometer in the crawl space costs very little and settles the argument, because it tells you the relative humidity down there rather than leaving you to reason about it from the porch.

When sealing is the right answer
Encapsulation is the durable fix for a crawl space that will not stay dry: a heavy liner over the ground and up the walls, sealed vents, insulation at the perimeter rather than in the floor above, and a dehumidifier draining to somewhere sensible.
It is not a first response to a damp reading. Water coming in from outside has to be stopped outside first, with gutters that discharge away from the house, grading that falls away, and a drainage solution if the lot delivers water to the foundation. Sealing a crawl space that is still receiving water traps it.
